PARTAHI LUMBANTORUAN, 34

Lumbantoruan, or "Mora" as he was called by friends, was two semesters away from achieving his dream of becoming a teacher. He left Indonesia three years ago to pursue a doctoral degree in civil engineering, and he was one of 16 Indonesian students at VT, the Times reports. "We wanted him to succeed," said his father, Tohom Lumbantoruan, a retired military officer whose family sold property and cars to help his son pay the $8,000 a semester he needed for tuition, "but he met a tragic fate."
