Born to an Air Force family in South Korea, Read looked at various colleges before deciding on Virginia Tech, a popular spot for many of her high school classmates from Annandale, Va., her family said. Her aunt Karen Kuppinger told the AP that her niece had been adjusting to college life, making new friends and also considered joining a sorority: "I think she wanted to try to spread her wings."
