DOWNLOAD: "Making You Smile," a sneak peak from his still untitled disc, due this fall. The up-tempo tune is an "odd combination of an up feeling and a sad undercurrent," says Black, 46. "In the 1970s, it would've been a rock song. Today, it fits in with country music better."
HIS INSPIRATION: "This is one of the rare songs that happened without any kind of instrument around," says Black, who was sitting in the hot tub when his moment of musical genius struck. "Luckily I had a pen and paper near by. I wrote out the lyrics and quickly charted some musical notes so I wouldn't forget the melody."
