Everyone's favorite Italian plumber got his own shot at the big screen in 1993's Super Mario Bros., the first major film based on a video game. Directed by the creators of '80s icon Max Headroom, it had a convoluted plot involving dinosaurs who looked like humans, parallel dimensions, and superpowered bouncy boots. Critically acclaimed actor Bob Hoskins, who played the lead role alongside John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper and Samantha Mathis, later called it the worst mistake of his career, and the film failed miserably at the box office.
