Crime: On August 23, 1993, Eric Smith of Steuben Country, New York, stopped four-year-old Derrick Robie, who was walking to his day camp, and lured him into the woods. There, Smith allegedly strangled the boy, dropped a rock on his head and sexually abused him. Robie died during the attack from blunt force trauma to the head.

Sentence: Smith, who pled not guilty by reason of insanity, was convicted of second-degree murder in 1994 and was given the maximum sentence for juvenile murderers in New York – nine years to life in jail. According to The Corning Leader, the 14-year-old served the first three years of his sentence in a juvenile facility before being moved into the adult prison system, where he remains today.
