The death of Paltrow's father, Bruce, from throat cancer on Oct. 3, 2002, was her "worst nightmare. ... He was the one person in your life that you always think, 'I'm safe because they're there,' " Paltrow (with her dad at the 1999 Oscars, when she won Best Actress honors for Shakespeare in Love) told USA Today.
