Aretha Franklin proved herself worthy of the title "diva" in 1998 when, at the last minute, she stepped in for an ill Luciano Pavarotti to sing the aria "Nessun Dorma" -- several octaves below her normal range -- and brought the house down. It wasn't her first time attempting opera; she had sung the song days before at a benefit concert, USA Today reported at the time.
