In 1947, Broadway producer Elia Kazan gave Brando his career-launching role as Stanley Kowalski (opposite Kim Hunter as Stella) in A Streetcar Named Desire. He went on to be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar playing the same role in the 1951 movie version.
