Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and Vanessa Williams were gunning to play Dorothy Dandridge, the first African-American to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar (for 1954's Carmen Jones), but Berry ultimately won the role in HBO's 1999 biopic. The following year, Berry (at the film's premiere) took home an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her work in Introducing Dorothy Dandridge.
