Monster's Ball producer Lee Daniels felt she was "too beautiful" for the part of down-on-her-luck waitress Leticia Musgrove, but after fighting hard for it, Berry won the role – and later a 2002 Best Actress Oscar, making her the first African-American actress to do so. "This moment is so much bigger than me," a sobbing Berry said upon accepting the award.
