MOST TERRIFYING MOMENT
In a sight reminiscent of his father's fatal 2001 Daytona crash, Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s race car erupted into a fireball July 18 after he smashed it during a warm-up for the American Le Mans series in Sonoma, Calif. The 29-year-old NASCAR star escaped with second-degree burns on his face and legs, and was released from an area hospital the next day. Despite his injuries, the winner of this year's best driver ESPY award is expected to compete this weekend in the Nextel Cup.
