MOST-WATCHED DEPARTURE

After more than 20 years as anchor for NBC's top-rated Nightly News, Tom Brokaw, 64, signed off Dec. 1 to begin what successor Brian Williams calls "the most carefully planned vacation in American history." Brokaw became a household name in 1976 as a Today show cohost (top left), then went solo with the News in 1983 and was the only network anchor to report live from the fall of the Berlin Wall (bottom left) in 1989. And he went out with just as much fanfare: about 15 million viewers, a record high, tuned in to his final telecast.
