They're Engaged!

News of the couple's engagement breaks. Soon after, sources say the curvier Garner is indeed pregnant, and is seen wearing a ring. Affleck's friend, producer Chris Moore says to PEOPLE, "Ben's got the right woman, and he's excited about this new chapter in his life. He's really excited about becoming a father, and Jen seems ecstatic."

Secret Wedding

Affleck and Garner exchange vows in front of Garner's Alias costar Victor Garber, who got ordained for the day to officiate the wedding, in Parrot Cay on the Turks and Caicos islands. She sports a loose ponytail. He wears a T-shirt and a five o'clock shadow. "We were able to have a beautiful, private wedding, and I couldn't be happier," Garner says to PEOPLE. Adds Affleck's pal, director Kevin Smith: "They're in it for one another, not for anyone else. They didn't need or want a crowd. They just wanted each other."

After blurting out on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno that they were expecting a girl, Garner celebrates her baby shower at the Hollywood Hills home of longtime pal Jean Louisa Kelly, star of the TV series Yes, Dear.

The newlyweds welcome baby Violet (a Garner family name) Anne Affleck. A friend says to PEOPLE: "You took two of the best people, who have the most love and affection for each other, and just when you think the ultimate is the two of them finding each other, this little girl came into their lives."

That's a Wrap

After five seasons, Alias airs its last episode. "Jennifer is in a wonderful place," says a friend to PEOPLE. "She can relax a little bit right now and enjoy having this simple, normal life." A week later, along with Reese Witherspoon, Garner visits Hurricane Katrina survivors. "I see a lot of hope and joy in these children, laughing and playing despite all that's happened," the new mom says to PEOPLE. "I'll think of them when I hold my own daughter close to me."

Garner's Tears & Laughter

Garner's dramedy Catch and Release debuts at No. 5, grossing $15 million at the box office. The actress was pregnant with Violet when she filmed the movie about a woman whose fiancé dies. "I felt really emotional, so I could cry easily if I needed to," she tells PEOPLE. In March, Garner, Affleck and Violet head to Vancouver to shoot Juno.

Garner is one of PEOPLE's 100 Most Beautiful, but credits Violet as "the most beautiful thing." "Just that she exists and I get to hang out with her...There's no one who is more fun," she tells PEOPLE. "To see my dimples in her makes me like my dimples because I share them with her."

Garner Goes Broadway

After returning to her action-packed roots in the thriller, Kingdom with Jamie Foxx, Garner, 35, also returns to Broadway, opposite Kevin Kline, in a revival of Cyrano de Bergerac. New York Times critic Ben Brantley calls Garner "captivating" as love interest Roxane. "Ms. Garner, I am pleased to report, makes Roxane a girl worth pining over," Brantley writes in his review.

Baby Number Two

Following her three-year wedding anniversary, Garner debuts her baby bump. Affleck confirms the reports to long time pal, director-actor Kevin Smith. "[Jen] is such a Martha Stewart type," Smith tells PEOPLE. "She is a perfect mom." On January 6, they welcome their second daughter, Seraphina Rose Elizabeth Affleck.
