Depp reunites with director Tim Burton for the seventh time to play the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, costarring Anne Hathaway. "He's a fascinating character," says Depp, who sports green eyes and fiery red hair for the part. "He's mad. He's unpredictable. To play the Mad Hatter and breathe life into Tim's vision is a dream come true."
Multiple sources tell PEOPLE that Depp, 48, and longtime love Paradis, 39, are all but officially finished. "It's so sad," says an insider of the couple, whose 14-year union produced two children, daughter Lily-Rose, 12, and son Jack, 9. Though both Deep and Paradis initially deny the reports, a rep for the couple confirms on June 19 that they "have amicably separated".
Rumors of a romance between Depp and Rum Diary costar Amber Heard heat up as the pair is photographed holding hands at a Rolling Stones concert. Though the actor remains mum on his relationship status, he and Heard are photographed together again in July.
Playing yet another eccentric character, Depp stars as Tonto in the big screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger, costarring Armie Hammer. The film is poorly reviewed and flops at the box office, earning less than $30 million over opening weekend.
Not long after going public with their relationship, Depp and Heard get engaged, PEOPLE confirms. "They couldn't be happier to be engaged and excited to share the rest of their lives together," a source tells PEOPLE, adding that Heard "has really taken well to the kids and really enjoys spending time with them."
