"I got two perms when I was little. My mom hated that I wanted to get a perm. She was never heavy-handed – she always wanted us to be who we were and express ourselves how we wanted to. I felt that at 11 years old, I wanted a perm. I got [tighter] curls than Shirley Temple. I loved it and now I look at pictures and realize I was out of my mind."
