America got a $650 million introduction to Keira Knightley with the Disney megahit Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, making her the most successful British import in Hollywood since Kate Winslet (Titanic). The actress, who got her start in the indie film Bend It Like Beckham, shines in period pieces, like her Oscar-nominated turn in Pride & Prejudice.

The striking yet self-deprecating actress pokes fun at her looks, but does take accusations about her health seriously. When a British tabloid insinuated that she was anorexic, Knightley denied it and sued the publication.
