If there was one breakout star of 2012, it was Kerry Washington. The actress, who had been on Hollywood's radar for some time, launched to superstardom with a Scandal: her breakout role as Olivia Pope, a stylish Washington, D.C., "fixer" with her own bombshell secret, on the hit ABC series.

Washington has come full circle with the network, beginning her career on an ABC Afterschool Special before scoring bit parts in films ranging from teen romance Save the Last Dance and spy drama Mr. & Mrs. Smith to superhero franchise Fantastic Four. The stunning George Washington University alum also landed an endorsement deal with L'Oreal.

The star's professional success in 2013, including starring opposite Jamie Foxx in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, coincided with her own personal high point: secretly marrying former football player Nnamdi Asomugha and welcoming the couple's first child, daughter Isabelle Amarachi, on April 21, 2014.

"I imagined I'd be a clinical psychologist, with a focus on how performance shapes identity," she told Elle. "I'd figure out ways to use role-playing in the healing of people."
  2. Kerry Washington's close relationship with President Obama made her think twice about starring on Scandal, in which she portrays a Washington, D.C., "fixer" who has an affair with the president. "I thought, 'If the president on the show is black, I will not do the show,'" she told Ebony. "I didn't want to do anything that compromised my relationship with the [president]."
  3. After graduating from college, Kerry Washington briefly moved to India to study yoga and a rigorous form of traditional Indian theater. "I never even got onstage," she told the New York Post. "You're not allowed to until you've studied for years."
  4. While giving the commencement address at her alma mater, George Washington University, Kerry Washington revealed she is cousins with former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
  5. In order to play a lesbian longing for a child in Spike Lee's 2004 film She Hate Me, Kerry Washington was sent to "lesbian boot camp" by the director. "I always approach a role like an anthropologist, so I like to lose myself in a culture and an identity," she told The Advocate. "It was amazing to spend time in that world."
