Liv Tyler: Snapshot

Liv Tyler
Date of Birth
July 01, 1977
Birth Place
New York, N.Y.
A 1988 Aerosmith concert changed Liv Rundgren's world forever: It was there she learned that the band's Steven Tyler (those lips!) was her biological father.

In the 1990s, Liv Tyler put her ga-ga gorgeous looks – and new surname – to good use, landing on the cover of Seventeen at age 15. But her breakout role can be credited to her father, Steven. In the 1994 Aerosmith music video, "Crazy," she played a schoolgirl who ditches class to hang out at a strip club with Alicia Silverstone. The video turned her into a rock sex symbol and led to roles in such movies as the tender coming-of-age film Stealing Beauty, blockbusters like Armageddon and the record-breaking Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Tyler, who married British musician Royston Langdon in 2003, had son Milo the following year. In 2008, the actress separated from Langdon before shattering the box office with The Incredible Hulk. After spending a few years out of the spotlight, Tyler makes a mini comeback with a 2014 role on The Leftovers and some even bigger news: She's expecting baby No. 2 with boyfriend Dave Gardner.

Liv Tyler: Five Fun Facts

  1. Liv Tyler was named after Liv Ullmann, a Norwegian actress and muse to Ingmar Bergman, after her mother, Bebe Buell, saw Ullmann on the cover of TV Guide.
  2. At 17, Liv Tyler had her first onscreen kiss with Silent Fall costar Richard Dreyfuss, who is nearly 30 years her senior. "I was nervous. But I think he was, too. I mean, there is quite an age difference," she tells USA Today in 1994. The kiss is edited out of the final cut.
  3. Liv Tyler was nicknamed "Action Pants" on the set of The Incredible Hulk after her pants ripped while filming and the crew got a peek at her behind. 5. "I used to pretend I was a rock singer," Liv Tyler told USA Today in 1994. "I'd use the bedpost as a microphone and I had a plastic guitar and high heels. I always wanted to be up there with him [Steven Tyler]."

Rock Stars & Centerfolds

1974 Playboy centerfold Bebe Buell has an eight-month romance with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler. In July 1977, while in a relationship with rocker Todd Rundgren, Buell (right) gives birth to a daughter she names Liv Rundgren. Rundgren is listed as the father on the birth certificate because Tyler is in the middle of his well-documented drug excesses. "Todd's my spiritual father. I love him," Liv tells PEOPLE in 1992.

Discovering Daddy Tyler

Buell introduces Liv to Steven Tyler at a Rundgren show but not as his daughter. "I didn't know what it was, but I started to see him more, and it would mean so much to me that I would write about it in my diary," she tells PEOPLE in 1992. "I was very confused." When Liv sees Mia (Steven's daughter with his first wife Cyrinda, who is a splitting image of Liv) at an Aerosmith concert in 1988, she realizes Steven is her biological father. ''I don't think my dad was in any position to be a father. Steven, that is,'' Tyler (pictured with Mia and Steven) tells the AP in 2001. ''What an amazing thing Todd did for me…luckily, it just made me feel more loved. It meant that I had two dads instead of one.''

Model Mode

While living in NYC's Greenwich Village, Tyler, 14, begins modeling when former supermodel Paulina Porizkova takes photos of her that end up in Interview magazine. "Everything on Liv's face is right, and with the dark hair and pale skin, she looks very now," Porizkova tells PEOPLE. In November 1992, she lands on the cover of Seventeen. "It happened sort of naturally, since I've been around this all my life," Liv tells PEOPLE.
