It makes sense that a star comedian like Tracy Morgan would have a way with words.

So, as he gears up to host Sunday's 2013 Billboard Music Awards, the funnyman says he chooses his terms wisely when describing how he feels about his hosting duties.

"Words take on meaning," he explained to PEOPLE on Wednesday. "If I say, 'I'm nervous,' then I'm going to be nervous. If I'm excited, then I can't wait for it to start. People who are nervous can't wait for it to be over. Nervousness is negative to me. Excitement is the way I like to use it."

Adds the former 30 Rock actor: "I'm 44 years old. I've been in show business for 20 years. I'm a grown man. I'm a pro."

As for what to expect as he takes center stage on the night of music, Morgan won't give away much, but he does say, "Some people are going to be in the line of fire" when it comes to his jokes.

But Morgan – who especially looks forward to meeting Madonna, Taylor Swift and Icon Award winner Prince, who will perform live – assures that none of his remarks are meant to be taken personally.

"I'm not looking forward to making fun of anybody, because these are all the best of the best in the world," he says. "I'm just going to be excited to be there."

Check out Morgan in action when the show airs live from Las Vegas on ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET.
