President Obama was among the many fans expressing their sorrow and gratitude. The President released a statement celebrating Ramis's ability to make viewers laugh and think at the same time: "When we watched his movies ... we didn't just laugh until it hurt. We questioned authority. We identified with the outsider. We rooted for the underdog. And through it all, we never lost our faith in happy endings."
Meanwhile, New Yorkers gathered to create their own tribute, building a touching impromptu shrine outside of a favorite Ramis haunt: Hook & Ladder 8.
Located in TriBeCa, Hook & Ladder 8 is better known as the iconic firehouse from the Ghostbusters movies. Fans of Dr. Egon Spengler and Ramis's many other celebrated roles and films stopped by the building to leave flowers, candles, photos and other mementos unique to his legacy.
Overnight, Hook & Ladder 8 became framed in clusters of Twinkies, Cheez-Its, spore samples and Nestlé Crunch bars, all dedicated to Ramis's Ghostbusters character. The heartfelt and clever vigil to the beloved star continues to grow.
