Dancing with the Stars Pro Val Chmerkovskiy: 'Thank God the Blood Subsided'

Originally posted 05/21/2013 01:30PM

Zendaya's elbow went flying, and Val Chmerkovskiy's night was suddenly in jeopardy.

But Chmerkovskiy, 27, being the pro that he is, soldiered on after the accident in dress rehearsal for Monday's Dancing with the Stars left him with a deep gash over his right eye that almost sent him straight to the hospital before the first night of the season 16 finale.

"That's what I was worried about," he told PEOPLE after the show. "It's going to keep pouring, pouring, pouring, and I'm going to need stitches. If I was going to have to go get stitches, then I wouldn't have time to make it back. So thank God the blood subsided."

Chmerkovskiy did hurry off after the interview to seek medical care – brother Maks took him for 14 stitches! – but not before he and Zendaya earned perfect scores on all of their dances.

Jodi Arias Pleads for Life in Prison, Shows Family Photos in Court

Jodi Arias Pleads with Jury for Life in Prison

Originally posted 05/21/2013 02:45PM

In a complete reversal, Jodi Arias addressed the jury on Tuesday and urged them to sentence her to life in prison so her family doesn't have to suffer any more.

"I've made public statements that preferred the death penalty. I lacked perspective," Arias, dressed in black, said in the Phoenix courtroom.

"I can't in good conscience ask you to send me to death because of them," Arias said as she pointed to her parents and her baby sister, Angela, who now has a daughter of her own (Arias says she has only met the child from behind heavy glass). "That would be tantamount to suicide ... Please, please don't do that to them. I want everyone's healing to begin and for their pain to stop."

Zach Sobiech Leaves Behind Inspiring Legacy

Originally posted 05/21/2013 12:15PM

He was given months to live last June, but that didn't stop Zach Sobiech from becoming a rock star – and an inspiration to millions.

Sobiech passed away Monday, 17 days after his 18th birthday. First diagnosed with osteosarcoma when he was 14, Sobiech's music became his way of expressing himself. His song "Clouds" not only went viral last December, but also resulted in a star-studded celebrity tribute video earlier this month.

"My closure is being able to get my feelings into these songs. So [friends and family] could have something to remember me by, or lean on when I was gone," he says in a 22-minute film about his story, My Last Days: Meet Zach Sobiech, featured on SoulPancake.

And there's no mistaking him four years later in The Hangover Part III, in theaters Friday.

"The cheeks kinda give it away, right?" his mom, Carrie Holmquist, jokes to PEOPLE. In honor of the third installment (the last of the series, promises director Todd Phillips), we give you a trio of little known, fun facts about the littlest member of the franchise.
