A nervous-looking Jimmy Fallon took to the NBC Tonight Show stage Monday night, but quickly warmed up with the help of family and some famous friends.
"I really don't know how I got here," Fallon, 39, said during a sentimental opening monologue for his first night at the helm of the legendary show.
"I remember asking my parents to stay up late to watch Johnny Carson," said Fallon, whose mom and dad waved and blew kisses from the audience. "I can just think there's some kid asking their parents to stay up to watch me."
After introducing himself to the 240-person audience, the former SNL cast member and Late Show host, backed by his house band The Roots, gave a shout-out to wife Nancy Juvonen and infant daughter Winnie, who were backstage, before warning the audience, "I'll make fun of everybody on this show."

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Mean Girls, which is great news for those of us still trying to make "fetch" happen.
In the meantime, Vulture caught up with director Mark Waters to share some insider gossip, none of which was about Janis Ian and that eighth grade pool party.
While we're still not sure why "grool" hasn't been added to the dictionary or if Damian ever got his pink shirt back, Waters's most interesting reveal – for those who didn't memorize the DVD's special features – was the casting shakeup revolving around the now-classic high school comedy's queen bee.

About a week after being nominated for the worst actress Razzie Award, Lindsay Lohan announced she will try to revive her acting career with a new film.
Lohan, 27, took Sundance by surprise on Monday with an impromptu, 20-minute press conference about Inconceivable, a movie she will star in and produce. Plot details remain scarce: Attendees were told the project is a thriller and that Lohan's character is "a young woman on a journey to reclaim something that's she's lost," the Associated Press reports.
Sources tell PEOPLE the last-minute gathering was strange from start to finish. Just a few reporters were present, and they were forbidden from asking anything unrelated to Inconceivable – meaning questions about Lohan's personal life were off-limits.
