Amy Winehouse Cancels Out of London Gig

Originally posted 05/22/2009 03:00PM

A scant two weeks two weeks after her last concert in the Caribbean ended in controversy, Amy Winehouse has again prompted questions about the state of her health – by pulling out of a homecoming gig in London.

Winehouse, 25, was set to perform at the celebration of a 50th birthday of her record label Island on Sunday, May 31. But Island issued a statement Friday saying that she will not now be taking to the stage.

The reversal comes after a performance in her adopted home of St. Lucia ended prematurely, which her reps blamed on lighting failures and other technical mishaps in the stormy Caribbean weather. But there were also reports of forgotten lyrics and reputed booing by the audience.

With Amy Winehouse, it's not just complicated. It's extremely complicated.

Soon the world will find out just how much so as the troubled 25-year-old singer and her family open themselves up to Israeli-American interviewer Daphne Barak for a documentary shot at Winehouse's retreat on the island of St. Lucia, according to a post on her MySpace blog.

Barak recently spent time with Winehouse and her father Mitch for what the singer's blog calls "a truthful and revealing look at her complicated life." Footage and photos posted on Barak's own Web site show Winehouse in the studio and hosting a birthday party, as well as a brief interview with Mitch, who explains how the Caribbean island has been a welcome getaway for his daughter during her public struggles with sobriety and fame.

The documentary is expected to be released later this year.

Simon Cowell Lives Large as Musicians Lose Millions in Downturn

Ubiquitous talent spotter Simon Cowell has seen his fortune rise as traditional rock stars lose out in the recession.

Cowell, who judges American Idol and the U.K's X Factor and Britain's Got Talent, is seven percent richer than last year, with a net worth of at $175.2 million, according to Ian Coxon, editor of The Sunday Times Rich List.

And he's nearly alone on this one. His rise comes as others fare poorly in the struggling economy.

Ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, 66, holds onto his third-place position in the list of British music millionaires, but his wealth has fallen from $730 million to $642.4 million – a drop of 12 percent. The decrease is attributed to "falling property and share values [that] have wiped $87.6 million off Sir Paul McCartney's fortune," The Sunday Times says.

This time Amy Winehouse intends to work as well as play in the sunshine of St. Lucia.

The singer, 25, is back in a bikini on the Caribbean island where she has spent most of this year on an extended vacation. She has been photographed, sans trademark beehive, riding horseback and chatting to local children as she settles back into island life.

But this visit she is planning to get back to her singing, her rep says. "She is having her usual break," rep Chris Goodman tells PEOPLE. But "she will start working with Salaam Remi soon."

Amy Winehouse Is a Sucker for Thumbs

Amy Winehouse Is a Sucker for Thumbs

Originally posted 03/27/2009 03:00PM

It looks like Amy Winehouse still has a habit she should've kicked years ago ... 20 years ago, to be more specific.

The sultry songstress, 25, is sometimes seen sucking her thumb, most recently while leaving a private clinic in London on Thursday. According to the American Dental Association, that's fine – until a bit before your permanent teeth start to come in.

Thumbsucking, a natural and soothing reflex in infants that most people tire of by age 4 or 5, can cause serious tooth problems and even change the shape of the roof of a child's mouth.

"We expect it to go away between ages 2 and 4," Dr. Mary Hayes, D.D.S., a Chicago dentist, says. "Some people who continue to suck their thumbs get distortion of the mouth, they get a funny bite or what's called a cross-bite, which in some people you can see as asymmetry."

Amy Winehouse Pleads Not Guilty to Assault

Originally posted 03/17/2009 09:20AM

Amy Winehouse cracked her knuckles, adjusted her beehive – and to the delight of the 20 reporters in a London courtroom – spoke clearly from behind a clear plastic shield on the stand Tuesday morning.

Uttering only a few lines during a 15-minute hearing in the City of Westminster Magistrates Court, Winehouse proudly proclaimed her name as Amy Jade Civil – her married name. And, leaning forward to speak through a gap in the plastic, she pleaded "not guilty" when a charge of common assault against Sherene Flash was put to her.

The assault is alleged to have happened in September 2008 in Berkeley Square, London, at a high society ball.

Amy Winehouse Back in London – to Face Divorce?

Originally posted 03/02/2009 08:00AM

Amy Winehouse is back in the U.K. – with an old hairstyle and a new life.

The singer, 25, arrived early Sunday, sporting her trademark beehive, which replaced the curly mop she had worn during her near three-month extended vacation on the Caribbean island of St Lucia.

And while the hair was back, she has a fresh start ahead of her. Soon after her plane landed at London's Gatwick Airport, Winehouse received a tour of her new home on the northern outskirts of London by her father Mitch, and they spent much of the afternoon watching their soccer team Tottenham Hotspur lose to Manchester United.
