Ellen DeGeneres & Portia De Rossi 'Happily Married Without Children'

Originally posted 06/23/2009 04:45PM

Don't expect Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi to become moms anytime soon.

Although the couple told PEOPLE last August that they talk about having kids, they have decided that they are happier being cool aunts.

"I don't think we're going to have kids," DeGeneres tells AOL Television. "We have animals, and we love them. And, you know, we are brand new aunts. Her brother and his wife just had a baby girl who's a month old now, and it's fun to be a part of that."

With Emmys galore already to her name, Ellen DeGeneres can now add another trophy to her shelf – this one relevant to her personal life.

"Love comes in lots of different forms," said DeGeneres, 51, with her wife, Portia de Rossi, 36, standing beside her as the crowd cheered at Saturday's 20th annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles. "I am flabbergasted by the fact that we're still trying to fight," she added. "I am not trying to fight for gay rights – I am trying to fight for equal rights."

The TV host's award from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation League, at the Nokia Theater, was for the 2008 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show on which Ellen discussed her wedding day. Speaking onstage, DeGeneres said, "Portia, I love you."

Portia de Rossi is a happy woman these days: She has a nice home, a wonderful wife – Ellen DeGeneres – and a big role on a new TV show, Better off Ted.

So what else is on her mind?

Not making babies, the Australian-born actress, 36, tells USA Today. "It's the same thing every single year – that I am trying to get pregnant," she says of rumors that she is planning to start a family with DeGeneres, 51, whom she wed last August at the couple's Los Angeles home. "And I'm not. Maybe one day I'll want to have kids, but it's not something we've talked about recently."

Though Ellen DeGeneres is at a good place in her life, the TV host still dreams of greener pastures, saying in one of those humorous deadpan non-sequiturs of hers, "I like peace and I like houses."

Now, if she can just get her wife, Portia de Rossi, to clean up after her drinks.

Speaking to Ladies' Home Journal for its March issue on the day after Barack Obama was elected – and California voters put a knife into the heart of the state's same-sex marriage law – DeGeneres, 51, said that she felt her most beautiful on "the day I got married" to de Rossi in August 2008.

In fact, the recollection of that day (and the ramifications of California's Proposition 8) sent DeGeneres into tears – and running from the room.

The couple celebrated their birthdays with a joint bash at their Beverly Hills house Saturday, PEOPLE has learned.

DeGeneres turned 51 on Jan. 26. Five days later on Jan. 31, de Rossi celebrated her 36th birthday.

The party kicked off around 8 p.m., with many guests partying in the backyard, where deejay Samantha Ronson, who brought along girlfriend Lindsay Lohan, spun her own mix for the birthday pair.

According to a partygoer, "This is their first big party together as a married couple. [Ellen] and Portia seem very excited to have all their friends here."

Five months after her wedding to Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi is declaring that marriage has "completely changed my life."

"Marriage is a different way of being together," the actress told PEOPLE Friday while promoting her upcoming ABC series Better Off Ted at the Television Critics Association event in Pasadena, Calif.

Even though the couple have been together since 2004, tying the knot strengthened their bond. "There's a peace to [being married] and a sense of togetherness that we just didn't have before. And I didn't even realize it would change as much as it has, but it's so lovely," said the actress.

Voters Scrap Same-Sex Marriage in California | Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi

Voters Scrap Same-Sex Marriage in California

Originally posted 11/05/2008 11:00AM

Californians voted Tuesday to ban same-sex marriage, setting the stage for a court battle over the legitimacy of roughly 16,000 such marriages – including those of celeb couples Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi and Star Trek's George Takei and Brad Altman.

With nearly 96 percent of the votes counted, controversial Proposition 8 passed by just over 52 percent (The initiative had drawn widespread opposition from Hollywood celebrities, including Brad Pitt, director Steven Spielberg, and even California's Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger).

As Takei pondered the disappointing election returns Tuesday night, the 71-year-old actor told PEOPLE he was hopeful that his Sept. 14 marriage to Brad Altman would be "grandfathered in."

But Altman was less confident. "We tasted marriage now, and it really is delicious!" Altman added. "And the thought that the people of California might take our marriage away from us is really frightening and worrisome and upsetting."

DeGeneres – who wed de Rossi in August – has been an outspoken critic of Proposition 8. "I can't return the wedding gifts," she quipped. "I love my new toaster."

Ellen DeGeneres had a message for Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin on her talk show Wednesday: "We should all be equal."

The TV host took aim at the Alaska governor for favoring a federal ban on gay marriages.

"Basically, she wants to change the Constitution," DeGeneres, 50, said of Palin, 44. "I don't like it. I don't agree! And maybe it's because I'm gay that I think we should all be equal."

Ellen DeGeneres Defends the Right to Gay Marriage

Given her recent high-style nuptials to Portia de Rossi, it's no surprise that Ellen DeGeneres has come out against Proposition 8, the controversial California ballot initiative seeking to ban gay unions.

Describing the wording of Prop 8 as "tricky," the comedienne took to her blog to encourage her fans to vote against it.

"There's a California Proposition on the ballot that's a little confusing .... It's called, 'The California Marriage Protection Act' – but don't let the name fool you," she wrote. "It's not protecting anyone's marriage. Not yours. Not mine."

Of course, DeGeneres has a personal stake in the outcome. "I can't return the wedding gifts," she quipped. "I love my new toaster."

Earlier this month, both Brad Pitt and Steven Spielberg donated $100,000 to fight the proposition.
