While the Toronto International Film Festival may be over, PEOPLE went behind the scenes to capture some of the world's biggest stars.

Ben Affleck – who was promoting his spy thriller Argo (Affeck directed and stars) told his costars, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston and Alan Arkin to "look mean" while they playfully tossed popcorn in the air during their photo shoot.

"I've never had so much fun whoring myself out for a movie," Goodman joked at the Shangri-La Hotel.

Some things you totally see coming – that Bill Murray would be a great FDR in Hyde Park on Hudson, for instance. Or that Ben Affleck's Argo, about rescuing American embassy workers in Iran, would somehow nail the Hollywood satire/nail-biting escape genre. (Oh, who are we kidding? Johnny Depp waved to fans, looking calm and casual as he made his way down the red carpet last week at the Toronto International Film Festival.

It could have been just another premiere – another work obligation, another red carpet – for the actor, except he wasn't promoting himself or even a movie he worked on.

By his side: someone who is not a celebrity, but has been thrust into the spotlight nonetheless. In the same week PEOPLE printed a first-look at his new memoir, Life After Death, Damien Echols, one third of the so-called West Memphis Three, stood beside Depp at the Canadian premiere of the Amy Berg-directed documentary, West of Memphis, which Echols produced with his wife, Lorri Davis, about the the 1993 murder case.

For the past few years, he's played brainy Dan Humphrey on the CW series Gossip Girl, but now, Penn Badgley is ready to take on more serious roles – and be a part-time musician.

In his new film, Greetings from Tim Buckley, Badgley, 25, plays (and sings as) late singer Jeff Buckley.

"For the first time I can say that I'm incredibly excited to be an actor and have done something creative that I'm proud of," Badgley tells PEOPLE from the Toronto International Film Festival. "I really want to focus on is the fact that this is a movie where I'm acting."
