Dreamgirls star Anika Noni Rose says Jennifer Hudson will be the perfect mother.

"She will be a great, amazing and loving mom," Rose told PEOPLE at a party for Grey's Anatomy star Chandra Wilson's Broadway performance in Chicago on Monday in New York. "Having seen her with babies myself, that baby of hers is going to have a good time and be much loved."

The Tony winner and star of HBO's The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency says Hudson will ease into motherly duties. "She loves babies and now that she going to be a mother herself, this experience is going to be fun and rewarding for her. She will have no problems taking on the responsibilities."

Barely seven months after her mother, brother and nephew were murdered in Chicago, Jennifer Hudson is opening up about her relationship with her mom, Darnell Donerson.

"I was always a mama's baby," Hudson tells Essence in the magazine's June cover story. "I'd go and sleep in her bed until I was 15 years old."

The singer's fiancé David Otunga tells the magazine that one of Hudson's biggest concerns after she decided to throw herself back into work – she's promoting her debut album and touring with Robin Thicke – was the thought of having to answer questions about the loss of her family.

Five months after boyfriend David Otunga proposed to Jennifer Hudson on her 27th birthday, she returned the gesture with a surprise of her own: a proposal on Otunga's birthday.

The Grammy-winning singer did it last month with style, presenting Otunga – a Harvard-educated-lawyer-turned-pro-wrestler – with a personally designed Neil Lane engagement ring rocking out at 5 carats.

"Jennifer wanted to give him something really special when she asked David to marry her," says Lane, who worked with Hudson for months to design the ring. "It was very sentimental and romantic ... They are really in love."

Four months after her mother, brother and nephew were viciously murdered, Jennifer Hudson is getting back to business, hitting the road with Robin Thicke. But of course she's still coping with the pain of her family tragedy.

"It was so, so horrible what happened, and she's still hurting," says Hudson's childhood friend and longtime assistant Walter Williams III in this week's Entertainment Weekly cover story. "But she's a strong girl and she knows her family is in a better place. I really think she's going to be okay."

Jennifer Hudson Says Performing Is Therapeutic

Jennifer Hudson wants everyone to know she's doing okay.

On Friday's live episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, the singer said that she's happy to return to performing, and that singing at huge events such as the Super Bowl is "like therapy" for her.

"[I'm] in a very good place," the Oscar- and Grammy-winner, 27, told Winfrey. "I'm just glad to be back to work."

The highlight of Hudson's Grammy night on Feb. 8? Being handed her statuette by Whitney Houston, she says. "[That] almost surpassed" winning the award for best R&B album itself, she said. "I used to create duets with Whitney and myself."

She said her awards are in the piano room of her house, which she shares with her three dogs, named Oscar, Grammy and Dreamgirl.

The former American Idol contestant also sang her latest single, "If This Isn't Love," for the audience, but avoided talking about the murders last fall of her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew in Chicago.

Hudson will reportedly sing "If This Isn't Love" from her self-titled album.

The Grammy winner will kick off her first solo tour on April 2 in Philadelphia alongside R&B singer Robin Thicke.

Tyler Perry hopes Jennifer Hudson will continue performing – and even star in a film he wrote specifically for her.

"I just wrote a movie for her that I'm really excited about," the filmmaker, 39, told PEOPLE Wednesday's New York City premiere of Madea Goes to Jail, which opens to the public Friday. "I'm hoping she'll be able to do it."

Hudson, 27, kept a low profile following the tragic loss of her mother, brother and nephew last fall, but recently performed at the Super Bowl and the Grammys.

Unfortunately, her rep tells PEOPLE, "She will not be doing the film as she'll be on tour at the same time they are shooting."
