Ancient Creature with Scissor-Like Claws Is Named After Johnny Depp
Originally posted 05/18/2013 08:15AM
Johnny Depp was already a pretty unique guy. And now he can further boast that he's the only actor to have an obscure, extinct creature that lived half a billion years named after him.
A 505-million-year-old fossil discovered recently has been named Kooteninchela deppi because of its scissor-like claws, which reminded the scientist who discovered it of Depp's character from the 1990 movie Edward Scissorhands.
"When I first saw the pair of isolated claws in the fossil records of this species, I could not help but think of Edward Scissorhands," the scientist, David Legg, said on the website of London's Imperial College (see an image of the creature there). "Even the genus name, Kootenichela, includes the reference to this film, as 'chela' is Latin for claws or scissors."

Johnny Depp Teams Up with Damien Echols at Toronto Film Festival
Originally posted 09/12/2012 05:20PM
Johnny Depp waved to fans, looking calm and casual as he made his way down the red carpet last week at the Toronto International Film Festival.
It could have been just another premiere – another work obligation, another red carpet – for the actor, except he wasn't promoting himself or even a movie he worked on.
By his side: someone who is not a celebrity, but has been thrust into the spotlight nonetheless. In the same week PEOPLE printed a first-look at his new memoir, Life After Death, Damien Echols, one third of the so-called West Memphis Three, stood beside Depp at the Canadian premiere of the Amy Berg-directed documentary, West of Memphis, which Echols produced with his wife, Lorri Davis, about the the 1993 murder case.

Originally posted 08/12/2012 02:00PM
In her first interview since her split with Johnny Depp, Vanessa Paradis is asked about her longtime former partner.
The question triggers a rebuke.
"I don't want to talk about him," she tells the summer edition of French Elle while promoting her latest film, Cornouaille. "Who said that artists should sell their soul, expose everything about themselves? … It's my duty to promote this movie, and my albums, but can you imagine what it feels like to see people making a business out of your pain."
