Hillary Clinton beat Stephen Colbert at his own game when she made a "surprise" appearance on The Colbert Report on Tuesday night.

Colbert introduced Clinton's new book, Hard Choices, which was published on June 10, and began to poke fun at the politician, calling the book "656 pages of shameless name-dropping."

The White House Correspondents' Association Dinner has come a long way since its inception in 1920. (For example, did you know that until 1962, it was only open to men, even though the WHCA's contained women? That year – at the urging of Helen Thomas – JFK refused to attend until the ban on women was lifted.)

In its early years, the dinner featured a mix of singers, dancers and comedians as performers; not until 1983 when Mark Russell headlined did the practice of having a comedian host the event become the norm.

Since then, the Dinner has become a springboard for politically inclined comics to showcase their best material. Here are our five faves. Good luck to this year's host Joel McHale: He's got some big shoes to fill.
