Now that she's on the other side of her grueling nine-month breast cancer treatment, Joan Lunden is focused on using her story to empower women to take control of their health.

"I want to be a beacon of hope to women not to be afraid to do their own self-exam," Lunden told PEOPLE at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation luncheon Thursday in New York. "Not to be afraid to go to a doctor if they think something isn't right, and not to be afraid to insist that you get that mammogram or that ultrasound if you need it."

It's been a grueling nine-month battle for Joan Lunden, but the former Good Morning America host is now cancer-free and finally getting back to feeling like herself again.

"I just shaved my legs for the first time since a year ago," Lunden tells PEOPLE. "And I'm starting to get a little tiny bit of hair on my arms. When you've gone through this, you look at those things like, 'Am I normal again?' You kind of want to feel whole again."

Nine months after Joan Lunden went public with the news she had been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, the former Good Morning America host has finished treatment and is focused on a new mission in life.

"You go in one person, and you really do come out another," Lunden tells PEOPLE of her battle with the aggressive form of breast cancer, which included 16 rounds of chemotherapy followed by a lumpectomy and six weeks of radiation.

"I've always been a health addict for a long, long time, but frankly I can't think of a more important assignment."

When Joan Lunden was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in June, the former Good Morning America host knew she had two choices.

"I could decide to do nothing, but that's certainly not my personality," Lunden, 64, tells PEOPLE in its latest issue, on newsstands Friday. "I was handed an opportunity to learn everything that I can about this and try to help others."

Her first move? Going public with her battle. She announced the devastating news of her diagnosis to fellow cancer survivor Robin Roberts on the ABC morning show, where Lunden left with some valuable advice.
