Drones are already helping farms herd sheep, and now they are serving as shepherds on the Serengeti.

Over 40,000 elephants and 1,200 rhinos were killed by poachers in 2013 to feed a black market that will pay up to $500,000 for the animals' horns and tusks. Conservationists have been searching for a way to stop poachers before these animals become extinct, and the Air Shepherd Initiative may have found a way.

Through the program, supported by The Lindbergh Foundation, drones are sent out into Africa's wildlife parks at night, when poachers are known to hunt. These silent and stealthy unmanned aerial vehicles use infrared cameras to detect animals and hunters out on the plains. When a drone finds a poacher, the GPS coordinates of the location are quickly sent to rangers, so they can track down the culprits before they kill.
