Matthew Fox stayed quiet last year following allegations that he hit a woman partly because it was a criminal case, but also because he didn't want to give the claims any legitimacy by addressing them.
"When you're involved in a criminal and a civil case, you're advised not to speak about these things, because they're trying to find the truth and depose witnesses," the former Lost actor, 46, says in an interview airing Wednesday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
"I also find that it's just a little bit undignified to come out and respond to people who make allegations that are so outlandish, with just one person saying, 'You did this,' and you come back and say, 'No, I didn't.' "

A judge on Wednesday awarded The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Adrienne Maloof temporary custody of her three sons, after she alleged that her estranged husband, Paul Nassif, choked one of them last week.
A rep for Nassif confirmed the court decision to PEOPLE, adding that his legal team was blindsided by the allegations, which Nassif denies.
Maloof, 51, claims that Nassif, 50, with whom she is locked in a bitter divorce and custody battle, turned around and choked one of the boys for being rowdy on a drive last Thursday, TMZ.com reported.

The pastor and gospel recording artist who gave the eulogy at Whitney Houston's funeral in February was beaten and carjacked in Detroit on Wednesday.
The Rev. Marvin Winans suffered cuts and bruises and had his wallet, a $15,000 Rolex watch and his 2012 Infiniti SUV stolen, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The three or four men who attacked Winans at a gas station in a northwest part of the city likely did not know who he was, police said.
