Big Brother Winner 'Evel Dick' Donato: Going Public with HIV Status Was 'One of the Best Things I've Ever Done'

Last October, Big Brother winner Dick Donato came forward to PEOPLE with a very personal revelation: He is HIV positive.

The disclosure, which also aired on VH1's Couples Therapy, shocked fans who wondered why Donato had been removed from a previous season of Big Brother.

But Donato, 52, says that some good come out of his revelation, and many of his fans have been inspired to get tested and start practicing safer sex.

So 10 months after going public, how is daily life for Donato?

Indiana Governor Mike Pence declared a public health emergency Thursday in the face of the worst outbreak of HIV in the state's history. Seventy-nine HIV cases have been linked to intravenous drug use in Southeastern Indiana's Scott County, and state health officials attribute it to an opiate painkiller called Opana. (Pence said Wednesday that Scott County typically sees just five cases per year.)
