It's been a season full of ruthless ambition and emotional chaos on Smash, and Katharine McPhee can't wait to get started on what's next.

"We had such an incredible time on the first season that I can only hope for [season 2] to be as enjoyable as the first," the actress tells PEOPLE. "The show has made some creative changes, so I think there will be some new characters and interesting new storylines."

Smash had some famous guest stars in its debut season, and McPhee has her favorites among them, including Bernadette Peters ("It was amazing to meet her and work with her!") and Uma Thurman ("I love her! She has a really funny and dry sense of humor.").

Hosting an intimate advance spin at the legendary studio, the guitarist gave fans a glimpse into the conception of Born and Raised, out May 22.

"I wrote 'Age of Worry' there, I wrote 'Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey' there, I wrote 'Born and Raised,'" Mayer explains, pointing to a couch nestled in the corner of the room.

"I've done four or five of these [listening parties] but this is definitely the most special because this is where the record was made."

Days after celebrating their twins' birthdays – in Paris, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon arrived hand-in-hand at the Opera Gallery in N.Y.C. for an arty fundraiser.

The pair was spotted laughing and enjoying themselves, sipping soft drinks and checking out tunes by DJ Mos at the event, which benefitted the Urban Arts Partnership. The happy couple – who recently renewed their vows – was apparently in a very charitable mood: Cannon placed the night's highest bid, nabbing a $21,000 Project Canvas shoe, that was paired with a diver watch, designed by Audemars Piguet.

Carey was among the celebrities who designed shoes for the event. Her creation, which was snatched up by BET chairman Debra Lee for $2,000, earned the highest price for a single pair of shoes during the evening.

Other celebrities contributing shoe designs at the event: Ellen DeGeneres and Swizz Beatz.

'Smiley' Sofia Vergara Steps Out After Reported Split

Sofia Vergara isn't letting a reported split from longtime beau Nick Loeb totally get her down.

The Modern Family star was in good spirits on Wednesday at the Einstein College of Medicine's Annual Spirit of Achievement Awards at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

"She [seemed] in the best mood," an onlooker tells PEOPLE of the actress, who was invited as jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz's guest. "Mother's Day is this weekend, and she talked about her son and how proud she is of him and how he's such a nice kid. No matter who came up to her table, she was taking pictures and people were being introduced to her."

Vergara also apparently had quite the appetite at the daytime affair.

"She was scarfing down Twinkies and popping them in her mouth," the source says. "If there was something fazing her, you couldn't tell at all. She just didn't care. She did every media interview and was chatting with people. You couldn't tell anything was wrong."
