Will the Grammys and Oscars Also Be Canceled?
Originally posted 01/16/2008 10:30AM
With the Golden Globe awards victimized by the writers' strike, Hollywood's attention – and deep concern – now shift to the Academy Awards and the Grammys.
So far, the Writers Guild of America "will not grant waivers to the recording industry, and in all likelihood, we will not grant one to the [Motion Picture] Academy," WGA-West Executive Assistant Director Jeff Hermanson told PEOPLE Tuesday.
The reason: the revenues from the broadcasts "go directly to the conglomerates."
Without waivers, the shows face the possibility of picket lines that stars in the Screen Actors Guild won't cross, forcing a possible Globes-style downsizing. For the Oscars, especially, Hermanson said, "at this point, it is bleak."

They may not have been on hand to take home their Golden Globes on Sunday night, but Hollywood's top actors – including Johnny Depp and Daniel Day-Lewis – expressed gratitude for the honor Monday.
Said Entourage winner Jeremy Piven: "I was on the set working last night and I heard my name called and then I heard a lot of yelling from the trailers. The cast broke out some champagne. I feel really lucky – except for the fact that I didn't get to be on the same stage as Steven Spielberg."

Hollywood's Leading Men React to Globes Wins

They may not have been on hand to take home their Golden Globes on Sunday night, but Hollywood's best actors expressed gratitude for the honor Monday.
"I was on the set working last night and I heard my name called and then I heard a lot of yelling from the trailers. The cast broke out some champagne," Entourage star Jeremy Piven said. "I feel really lucky – except for the fact that I didn't get to be on the same stage as Steven Spielberg."
Piven, who won best supporting actor in a series, miniseries or TV movie, says he's one of the lucky ones. Not only did he get the Globe, but he's got work in the middle of the strike. The set he was on was for a new Will Farrell comedy, The Goods.
On a plane from L.A. to Ireland when the announcements were made, Daniel Day-Lewis, best actor in a drama for There Will Be Blood, kept his statement short and sweet: "I'm delighted."
Johnny Depp – best actor in a comedy or musical for his turn as the murderous barber in Sweeney Todd – thanked everyone from his costar to his family. He released the following statement:
BR]
"I would like to thank my beloved friends at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for bestowing such an honor on me. It is a humbling experience, especially in the company of such talent. For many years the HFPA has supported my work and for that I have always been truly grateful. While this is indeed a happy day for me, I am overjoyed at the recognition the film as a whole is receiving. Tim [Burton] is a dear friend and a true artist whose vision and skill inspire us all. He is a genius. Without his unwavering trust and support, I would not be anywhere near where I am today. Also, big thanks and respect to Helena [Bonham-Carter], whose simply staggering performance as Mrs. Lovett is a wonder to behold. I must send a behemoth salute to the wonderful crew and cast of Sweeney Todd and all at Dreamworks/Paramount and Warner Bros. Pictures. In addition, I'd also like to extend my sincere gratitude to, first and foremost, my cherished friend and agent of forever ago, Tracey Jacobs; the extraordinary man and producer, Richard Zanuck; the mastermind Stephen Sondheim; and, of course, my precious family, Vanessa, Lily-Rose and Jack, for all of their love, support and pure and absolute happiness everyday. Overall, I believe it to be a proud achievement for everyone involved and on behalf of us all, I thank you."

Bare Bones Golden Globes a Ratings Loser
Originally posted 01/14/2008 01:05PM
What's a Golden Globes show without stars? Not much, if dismal ratings are any indication.
The Writers Guild strike took all the fun out of the usually festive awards show on Sunday night, and viewers voted with their remotes, tuning into the competition instead of the stripped-down, celebrity-free announcement broadcast, which came in fourth for the hour, the Associated Press reports.

This year's Golden Globes ceremony may have been shelved, but Hairspray star Nikki Blonsky isn't letting it get her down – or, stop her from throwing furniture.
Upon grabbing her best actress nomination, "I actually threw a coffee table, I was so excited," Blonsky, 19, told PEOPLE at a Slim Fast party in Los Angeles Tuesday. "I was so excited, I couldn't even control myself and I just picked up the coffee table and I threw it. I was in a hotel – if we were at home, my mom would've probably screamed if I threw a coffee table."
Though Blonsky may not be getting decked out for the Golden Globes this year, the awards season is far from over. Her secret to getting red carpet ready? "I just always make sure my nails are done."

Steven Spielberg to be Honored at Golden Globes – Next Year
Originally posted 01/08/2008 06:45PM
Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg will have to wait till January 2009 to pick up his latest honor.
Spielberg, 61, was set to receive the Cecil B. DeMille award at the Golden Globe Awards Jan. 13, but in the wake of the ceremony’s cancellation due to the Writers Guild of America strike, the Hollywood Foreign Press decided Tuesday that it would present the trophy to Spielberg at next year’s event rather than during the abbreviated press conference NBC will broadcast on Sunday, Variety reports.
Spielberg already has 11 Golden Globe nominations and two awards – for directing Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List.

It's Official: Golden Globe Awards Are Canceled
Originally posted 01/07/2008 07:40PM
The Golden Globe Awards have become a victim of the writers' strike.
Organizers said Monday they’ve officially abandoned the televised formal ceremony this Sunday and will replace it with a press conference announcement of the winners.
"We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007's outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television," Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Jorge Camara said. "We take some comfort, however, in knowing that this year's Golden Globe Award recipients will be announced on the date originally scheduled."
The drastic move is in response to the Screen Actors Guild pledge that its members would not cross picket lines by the Writers Guild of America, effectively leaving the show without any stars.
Instead of the lavish ceremony, the HFPA, which sponsors the awards, will now announce the winners at an hour-long press conference broadcast on NBC.

Golden Globes Seek Deal with Writers
Originally posted 01/02/2008 04:15PM
The Golden Globes called on striking Hollywood writers Wednesday for a deal to allow the show to be aired without picket lines.
Jorge Camara, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, said the Globes were seeking the same kind of interim agreement that the Writers Guild of America reached with David Letterman allowing his program to resume with union writers.
"We feel that the Late Show with David Letterman agreement is very reasonable, and hope and expect the WGA will agree to the same terms and ultimately permit the Golden Globe Awards to be broadcast as scheduled, without picket lines, on Sunday, January 13," said Camara.
