Jennifer Hudson hit plenty of emotional notes during the 51st annual Grammy Awards.
The singer collected the Sunday's first major award, best R&B album for her self-titled debut, making reference to her slain family in a tearful acceptance speech.
"Thank God, who brought me through," Hudson, 27, said on the stage of Los Angeles's Staples Center. "I'd like to thank my family in heaven – and those who are here today."
Hudson also thanked fiancé David Otunga, who told E! before the show, "the last few months have been an ordeal and it just brought us closer," for his support.

Jennifer Hudson, John Mayer Set to Shine at Grammys
Originally posted 02/07/2009 06:00PM
It's Grammy time – and the lineup of stars scheduled to perform at Sunday's show is stellar!
For music's biggest night, pop stars like Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and Katy Perry will hit the stage. Country crooners Carrie Underwood and Sugarland will also do their thing. Teen queens Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus will offer up a girl-powered duet, while guitar greats John Mayer and Keith Urban are teaming up to pay tribute to the late Bo Diddley. Even best new artist nominees the Jonas Brothers will do what they do best – make girls swoon – inside L.A.'s Staples Center.
In what promises to be one of the night's most emotional performances, Jennifer Hudson will take the Grammy stage. And she'll be warmed up. Hudson stepped back into the spotlight, following the tragic death of her mother, brother and nephew last year, to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl last weekend. Hudson also performed TK NEIL DIAMOND SONG at Friday's MusiCares Person of the Year gala.
Hudson is nominated for four Grammys, including best R&B album and best female R&B vocal performance.

Inside the All-Star MusiCares Tribute to Neil Diamond
Originally posted 02/07/2009 02:00PM
The night was a tribute to Neil Diamond, but it was Jennifer Hudson's moving take on his 1969 hit "Holly Holy" that brought down the house.
Wearing a gold jacket and black satin pantsuit, Hudson – backed by three singers – was serious and soulful in her powerful performance, which drew cheers from the audience three times during the song, especially when she hit high notes with a lot of vibrato.
The Los Angeles Convention Center audience of more than 1,500 immediately rose to its feet in a standing ovation as she mouthed the words "thank you" and took a small bow. As she looked up and saw the entire room standing and clapping, a look of genuine surprise came over her face, and her mouth fell open. She again mouthed the words "thank you," and waved to the crowd in appreciation.

Right smack in the middle of preparing for his upcoming tour, which kicks off in April, Kenny Chesney has decided to warm up his vocals on the Grammy stage Sunday night.
Though this will be his first ever performance on the award show, Chesney says he isn't nervous.
"Preparing for the Grammys is just a day of prep," he tells PEOPLE at his rehearsal Friday, adding, "The surroundings are the same as all of the other awards shows so I'm kind of comfortable."
Plus he'll have good pals like Kid Rock there to cheer him on. "I haven't seen him on this trip [yet]," chuckles Chesney. "I imagine we'll go eat some sushi somewhere or something. See what we can get into!"

Following her rousing Super Bowl comeback appearance last Sunday, Jennifer Hudson is set to perform a "surprise duet" at a Grammy party honoring music exec Clive Davis this Saturday in Los Angeles.
"Very touchingly, [Hudson] called me when she read of my lifetime achievement award, [and said] that she wanted to be part of it, that she wanted to come back with her musical life, so, of course, that is touching," Davis tells the Associated Press.
Davis added that Hudson, 27, will also be performing a surprise duet "that people won't see elsewhere."

First-time Grammy nominees the Jonas Brothers say they are each a bundle of nerves about Sunday's big show – but are concentrating on singing, not winning.

Originally posted 02/05/2009 12:45PM
Rapper M.I.A. had better add one more person to her Grammy entourage – a doctor.
The pregnant hip-hop star, who is nominated for two awards, is scheduled to perform at the ceremony Sunday, which is also her due date.
"They say that you're often late the first time, so I'm planning to go," the mom-to-be, 31, who is engaged to musician Benjamin Brewer, tells USA Today. "We'll see. People are trying to get me to relax and focus on the baby. It's like being in parallel universes."
