For the past few years, he's played brainy Dan Humphrey on the CW series Gossip Girl, but now, Penn Badgley is ready to take on more serious roles – and be a part-time musician.
In his new film, Greetings from Tim Buckley, Badgley, 25, plays (and sings as) late singer Jeff Buckley.
"For the first time I can say that I'm incredibly excited to be an actor and have done something creative that I'm proud of," Badgley tells PEOPLE from the Toronto International Film Festival. "I really want to focus on is the fact that this is a movie where I'm acting."

That's one full house!
The Soho House celebrated the second day of the Toronto Film Festival on Friday with parties for Imogene, The Master and Anna Karenina.
Trudie Styler was one of the first guests to arrive. Wearing a white dress, Styler – who co-produced Imogene – sipped on a Grey Goose Le Fizz cocktail and happily greeted Kristen Wiig and Darren Criss, who star in the film.
Upstairs, The Master star Amy Adams arrived in an elegant black dress and spent most of the party chatting with guests.
Julianne Moore was also spotted mingling with guests and relaxing after a busy day of festival activities.
Meanwhile at the Anna Karenina bash, Keira Knightley – who wore a black Elie Saab Haute Couture gown – spent most of the evening talking with costar Aaron Johnson and his wife, filmmaker Sam Taylor Wood.

During her first red carpet appearance since her cheating scandal broke, Kristen Stewart barely alluded to the rift in her personal life.
She was greeted Thursday evening at the Toronto International Film Festival by hoards of enthusiastic fans yelling, "Kristen, I love you!" and cheers of support.
When asked how she was doing, Stewart, 22, said merely, "I'm fine," according to the Associated Press.
Stewart, without referring to the scandal, told Reuters the support from fans was "amazing" and said she was thankful "to know that everyone is here."
Otherwise, the actress, who was promoting her new film On the Road, stuck to questions about the movie. During a Q&A after the screening, Stewart said playing the emotional side of her character, Marylou, was the most difficult thing about the role. "She loved so openly – and that's hard," said Stewart.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart both stepped out at high-profile, star-studded events on Thursday – and they were 2,500 miles apart.
When Stewart – making her first official public appearance since the cheating scandal that rocked their relationship – appeared at the Toronto International Film Festival to promote her new movie On the Road, the crowd cheered, "Kristen, I love you!" After posing for photos in a Zuhair Murad dress with costar Garrett Hedlund, she made her way over to fans to sign autographs.
"I've loved this book since I was 14," she told reporters. She also alluded to being as excited for On the Road as she would be for any Twilight film.
Pattinson, meanwhile, appeared with Taylor Lautner, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser and other members of the Twilight cast to present a new 90-second clip of Breaking Dawn: Part 2 at the MTV Video Music Awards in downtown L.A. (You can watch the heart-pounding clip below!)

The calendar says it's still summer and the kids call it back to school, but I say it's Oscar season.
Yes, already! I know this because on Thursday the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) blows into Canada, with 372 movies in competition representing some 72 countries. Sure, some of the buzzy movies from Cannes and Venice pop up, but Toronto is where everything starts to shake out. As usual, the biggest of the A-listers will be in town, towing their Oscar-bait projects with them.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis open the festivities with the world premiere of their time-travel mind-bender Looper, about a mob hitman (Gordon-Levitt) hired to kill his own future self (Willis). I'm not sure why you'd take that gig if you were Hitman the Younger, but I'll take it on faith that the film offers a convincing explanation.

The wait is nearly over ...
Kristen Stewart has been lying low since the news broke in July that she cheated on Robert Pattinson with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders. But come September, she'll be on the road again – promoting her latest film, On the Road.
Stewart, 22, will be in Toronto for the International Film Festival, PEOPLE has confirmed. The festival runs from Sept. 6 through 16 and will feature a special presentation of the film, which also stars Viggo Mortensen, Garrett Hedlund and Amy Adams. Stewart plays Marylou, a recently married 16-year-old in the adaptation of Jack Kerouac's book of the same name.

Stacy Keibler could sum up what she likes about George Clooney in one word.
"Everything!" she told PEOPLE on Friday night at the premiere of Clooney's film The Ides of March at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Clooney, 50, and Keibler, 31, are taking their budding romance semi-public at the event – they didn't walk the red carpet together but they did party with pals afterwards at Deq lounge at the Ritz-Carlton, the second night they were spotted together there.
