Whether Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva will face any criminal charges following their nasty
breakup now lies in the hands of Los Angeles prosecutors.
L.A. Sheriff officials confirmed Wednesday that they've wrapped a seven-month-long investigation into allegations that the Russian musician tried to extort millions from the actor/director with recorded phone conversations.
Gibson, meanwhile, is accused of domestic violence after a scuffle between the former couple at his Malibu home in Jan. 2010. Gibson admitted in court documents only to slapping Grigorieva to restrain her from shaking their baby Lucia.

A meeting between Los Angeles prosecutors and Mel Gibson's lawyers has fueled speculation that the actor could soon be charged with domestic violence – but legal experts say a decision could take several more weeks.
Last October, the L.A. County Sheriff's Department finished investigating a claim that Gibson punched then-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva in the face a year ago and knocked out two veneers on her teeth. But prosecutors have deferred any decision on whether to prosecute the actor until the sheriffs complete their investigation into claims that Grigorieva later extorted money from Gibson.
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore tells PEOPLE "the extortion investigation is about 90 percent done." Whitmore declined to give a timetable as to when the inquiry will wrap – despite speculation by insiders that prosecutors will decide on both cases as soon as this month.

More than two weeks after his wife filed for divorce, a smiling Mel Gibson made a rare public appearance with his girlfriend Tuesday night at the L.A. industry screening of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
"Mel has been single for almost three years and it's nice to see him getting out and enjoying himself," his rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.
The actor, 53, dressed in a black suit with a dark gray shirt, stepped out with Oksana Grigorieva, a 39-year-old Russian singer signed to his record label, Icon Records. The couple held hands as they walked the carpet before taking a seat at the screening at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
