It feels good to be back – and a little odd.
One Direction will perform on Thursday's X Factor, but band member Liam Payne says the experience obviously differs from when they headed to the top on the U.K. version of the hit competition series.
"It's quite strange being back on X Factor because you kind of know what the contestants go through and know what to expect next also," Payne told PEOPLE backstage after Wednesday night's show. "You know all the emotions they're going through."

Getting a good critique from Simon Cowell is rare – but X Factor contestant Rion Paige is no stranger to defying the odds.
Born with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, a rare disorder that caused a curving of the joints in her wrist, Paige, 13, has grown up always knowing she is different.
"It was hard for me, as a little kid, to see other kids holding microphones and able to move around when we used to go to karaoke places, and I would have to have my mom hold the microphone," Paige, whose first name is pronounced "Ryan," tells PEOPLE.
"I just realized I needed to adapt and I was going to have to do things differently than everybody else."

The fact that Simon Cowell is going to be a dad is really starting to sink in.
The X Factor judge, who's expecting his first child with girlfriend Lauren Silverman, recently saw a scan of his baby and says, "It is just surreal."
"You literally see this thing which is now alive moving around," he says in an interview with The Times of London newspaper. "I feel very paternal right now. So I am very happy."

How did Khloé Kardashian prepare for her big debut this week as co-host of The X Factor?
One word: Diet.
"I tried to cut out a lot of sweets," Kardashian, 28, told reporters after Thursday's show. "And I love ... cheese. [Cheese] is not a sweet, but ... I don't care."
An admitted cheese-o-holic, she likes "cheese on anything, I don't care. ... [I] binge eat," she says, then, with a laugh, adds, "and cry."
