ABC’s upfront Tuesday afternoon was an upbeat affair – not all upfronts are – with shoutouts to breakout hit Scandal and its star, Kerry Washington; to late-night host Jimmy Kimmel; and to now destined-to-retire Barbara Walters.
Kimmel, as is traditional, did a few minutes' worth of jokes at the expense of the other networks (he referred to CBS as "smug @#%&!!!!s") and his own: He suggested that Splash, the diving-celeb reality show, should be replaced by one with an empty pool. To be called Splat.
The clips introducing new shows were, on balance, pretty promising. These are the ones that struck my television tuning fork and filled me with anticipatory vibrations:

But can she take on the funny ladies of Bridesmaids?
Her bow and arrow won't help her much when her film goes head-to-head with the ensemble comedy at this year's MTV Movie Awards, where both The Hunger Games and Bridesmaids are nominated eight times (for movie of the year, best cast and breakthrough performance, among other categories).

Melissa McCarthy wants a second chance to make a good impression on Glenn Close.
The newly-minted Best Supporting Actress nominee joked that she'll be thinking more carefully about what to say to the Albert Nobbs star – a Best Actress nominee at this year's Oscars – should they cross paths again at the ceremony.
"I hope I can figure out something else to say to Glenn Close other than 'Holy s––– you're Glenn Close,' " McCarthy told PEOPLE after getting her Oscar news Tuesday morning. "I just think she makes beautiful, smart, perfect decisions in her characters and roles she plays. She looms very large to me."
The Bridesmaids star, who won an Emmy earlier this year for Mike & Molly, admits she was flustered when she first encountered Close at the Golden Globes but is planning ahead for Oscar night.

After working on Bridesmaids for "half a decade," Judd Apatow had every right to be proud that the movie he produced was nominated for a Golden Globe.
But despite calling the acknowledgment a "very exciting thrill," Apatow, 44, held back when it came to boasting about the feat to his family.
"Today was my daughter Maude's 14th birthday, so I didn't tell anyone in my family about the nomination," the doting dad told PEOPLE shortly after nominations were announced Thursday. "I didn't want to distract from our morning festivities. I thought it would be rude to make it all about me."

Melissa McCarthy is no longer just a bridesmaid. She's the bride.
The Mike & Molly Emmy winner and Bridesmaids scene-stealer has some big plans on her plate – from launching her own plus-size fashion line to getting hockey's prized Stanley Cup (for a movie) – during what is already a stellar year for her.
But none of her professional plans can top her favorite pastime, being mom to her two daughters with actor-husband Ben Falcone: Vivian, 4, and Georgette, 1½. McCarthy tells the Hollywood Reporter that being a mother actually helps her feel less insecure about her looks.
"The stupid stuff like what I wear or how I look I can't control, so I just try not to give too much energy to it," she says, calling her body a work in progress after giving birth to Georgette. "At 20, I would have been like: 'Don't they like me? Was it my hair?' At 41, I think the things that define me, I hope, are a lot more than those kinds of petty things."

Bridesmaids has won over audiences, as has its surprising leading man.
Chris O'Dowd plays Kristen Wiig's love interest, Officer Rhodes, in the hit comedy, which has turned the Irish actor into a breakout star – and reluctant sex symbol. While the 31-year-old is overjoyed by the success of the movie, he's still getting used to all his newfound female fans.
1. He's shocked by his sex symbol status
Audiences – particularly women – have been falling in love with O'Dowd. Many of his Twitter followers have been expressing their affection for the actor, even going so far as to Tweet marriage proposals. O'Dowd, who has a girlfriend, is baffled by all the attention. "I find it a little ridiculous … particularly women finding me attractive is a new sensation," he said recently on Conan.
