Zach "The Director" Braff returns on Friday with his second cinematic effort, Wish I was Here. It's the Kickstarter-funded story of a struggling actor – his last job was a dandruff commercial – caught in the confusion of dealing with grown-up responsibilities, while still wishing to be a kid. Complete with Shins songs, daydreams and waiting rooms, Wish I Was Here is littered with nostalgic nods to Braff's directorial debut: Garden State.

Everyone knows Zach Braff's Twitter feed is awesome (who else would Tweet, "I think Lebron's gonna go to the Mets. #sports"), so PEOPLE was more than happy to put our account in his hilarious hands for a day.

She's no Jersey girl, but Natalie Portman, a native of Long Island, N.Y., knows what it's like to grow up in suburbia. The 23-year-old Star Wars actress is putting her experience to use in Garden State, the directorial and writing debut of Scrubs star Zach Braff. Her role as a pathological liar in the romantic-comedy was a welcome change: "You can conserve your resources and be creative" on an independent film, she says. A Harvard graduate, Portman recently talked about her good fortune, being a sex symbol and what made her head to the other side of the George Washington Bridge.

Scrubs star Zach Braff is no longer just the goofy character J.D. from NBC's medical sitcom. He's also a rising star behind the camera, thanks to his directorial debut Garden State, costarring Natalie Portman, about a man who returns home after his mother's death. The film, which he also wrote, scored serious attention at this year's Sundance Film Festival. The 29-year-old actor-writer-director recently talked about giving props to his home state of New Jersey and his abundance of twentysomething angst.
