Much like his character in the Harry Potter movies, Matthew Lewis had to go through an awkward period before becoming a handsome hero.
"In the early days, Neville [Longbottom] and I were not very dissimilar – I was a short, chubby, shy kid, just like he was," Lewis, 22, told PEOPLE about his screen alter ego at a Manhattan press junket for Harry Potter and the Dealthy Hallows: Part 2.
"As he evolved and matured, so did I," adds the actor – although he admits that he's still got a ways to go with the ladies.

Harry Potter's handsome villain, Tom Felton, may play married-with-children in Deathly Hallows Part II but says real kids aren't coming anytime soon.
Felton's real-life girlfriend, Jade Gordon, makes a cameo appearance in the final installment of the Potter films, out July 15, as his onscreen wife.
"It was a lot of fun to play onscreen hubby and wife for a bit and have a kid for three days," Felton told reporters recently. "Three days is a good amount of time, for anyone wondering."

Saying goodbye is never easy – especially for Muggles.
As hundreds of fans cheered them on, the Harry Potter trio of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint walked the red carpet together for what may be the last time ever at the U.S. premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2 Monday night in New York City.
"It's been the most amazing roller coaster ride," Watson, 21, donning a curve-hugging Bottega Veneta gown, told reporters. Admitting she was feeling "emotional," Watson wore some precautionary waterproof mascara. (At last week's London world premiere, she cried. Her eyes stayed dry on Monday.)
For Radcliffe, also 21, growing up on the Potter movie set "was the most fantastic thing. There are no places more fun for a 12-year-old kid to be than a film set. It's like the ultimate playground. … It's been an exciting, bizarre, wonderful 10 years."

The Harry Potter franchise will wrap its decade-long run in theaters this summer in grand fashion, judging by the epic trailer, which has just been released.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 will have it all, from monumental battles to fire-breathing dragons. The characters come full circle, too, as the trailer highlights two famous lines from the book: Harry's "I never wanted any of you to die for me," and Voldemort's "Only I can live forever."
