The Melissa McCarthy who showed up to the Boston set of The Heat last summer with her two young daughters in tow could have passed for a friendly out-of-towner. Polite. Unassuming, even.
"A sweet midwestern mom," as costar Michael McDonald puts it. But then the cameras starting rolling – and McCarthy morphed into a "beast," says castmate Bill Burr.
The same woman who "doesn't even swear in real life," notes Heat director Paul Feig, "gets into character and suddenly the F-words start pouring out."

Filming The Heat wasn't all fun and games for one of Melissa McCarthy's costars.
As Michael McDonald explains, on-screen injuries weren't the only ones sustained during the filming process.
"I could have sworn my nose was broken," the actor, 48, who plays Julian, told PEOPLE at Sunday's New York City premiere of the crime comedy.
Referring to the use of a real phone book to film a phone book throwing scene, he said, "When we rehearsed it, [Melissa] was six feet away, but when we shot it, she was like two feet away. So she threw it and it was like, 'Boom!' It came so hard and so fast."

Leaving son Louis with a babysitter, Sandra Bullock made the most of a night out with friends Wednesday in London – looking smashing in a sexy black Monique Lhuillier dress and red heels.
The Oscar winner, 48, was spotted leaving the Nobu restaurant and heading to the Claridge's hotel in Mayfair.
She's currently in Europe to promote her upcoming crime comedy The Heat, costarring Melissa McCarthy, with whom Bullock has become close.
