Octavia Spencer woke up to some delightful news: The breakout star of The Help is up for Best Supporting Actress at this year's Academy Awards, it was announced early Tuesday.
"It's numbing!" Spencer, who won a Golden Globe for her role as Minny Jackson in the film, told PEOPLE of her nomination. "There were no guarantees. I didn't think I was in it and then they said my name and it was just a sigh of relief."
Once it sinks in and she has time to congratulate fellow nominee Melissa McCarthy – "I'm just going to call her and do a drive-by today," she says. "I'm thrilled for her!" – Spencer, 42, will have some decisions to make about what to wear on her big night.

It's a fantasy of countless women: Waking up in George Clooney's Italian villa on Lake Como.
But for The Help star Viola Davis, that dream was a reality. Only minus George, that is.
"I begged him to let me stay at his villa in Lake Como for my honeymoon," Davis, 46 – who married Julius Tennon in 2003 – tells Entertainment Weekly of her good friend and likely fellow Oscar contender.

Oscar crystal ball, anyone?
George Clooney and Viola Davis were named best actor and actress at Thursday's Critics' Choice Awards for their roles in The Descendants and The Help, respectively, while the old Hollywood-based silent movie The Artist took home four trophies, including best picture and best director, for its French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius.
The Help also won best ensemble cast, and Davis's costar Octavia Spencer claimed best supporting actress.

Viola Davis has become a mom – and her friend Octavia Spencer can hardly contain her excitement.
During a speech honoring Davis at an ELLE Women in Hollywood event sponsored by Calvin Klein and L'Oreal Paris in Los Angeles Monday, Spencer spilled the beans that her costar in The Help became a mom "like, two days ago."
In her own speech, Davis, 46, confirmed the new addition, a baby named Genesis. The newborn is a girl whom the actress "brought home a few days ago," Davis's rep tells PEOPLE.

How did the cast and the crew of The Help celebrate their film? With a hearty helping of macaroni and cheese, of course.
Following Tuesday night's Beverly Hills premiere, a Southern-themed afterparty honored the book-to-screen adaptation, which tells a story of racial tension in '60s Jackson, Miss.
The film's stars, including Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain, Mary Steenburgen and Allison Janney, were treated to Southern comfort food, such as fried chicken, pecan cupcakes and sweet tea.
