Richard Griffiths, the well-spoken, rotund presence perhaps best known for playing Muggle guardian Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter series – and who costarred again with Daniel Radcliffe in the stage drama Equus – died Thursday from complications after heart surgery at University Hospital in Coventry, central England, his agent announced Friday. He was 65.
"Richard was by my side during two of the most important moments of my career. I was proud to know him," Radcliffe said in a statement to the BBC.
Griffiths also won a Tony in 2006 for playing slightly wayward teacher Douglas Hector in Alan Bennett's The History Boys and was the outlandish Uncle Monty in the 1987 cult movie Withnail and I.

Since opening on Broadway last month, Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe has been attracting Hollywood's A-list to Equus, the show in which he stars.
Julia Roberts, Liam Neeson, Natasha Richardson, Lisa Rinna, Jeff Goldblum, Emma Roberts (Julia's niece), and Nathan Lane are just some of the big names who've seen Radcliffe's critically acclaimed turn – and infamous 10-minute nude scene – in the play about a teenager's unhealthy obsession with horses.
"The draw for film stars is to witness first-hand one of their most successful colleagues pulling off such a major 180-degree turn from his established screen persona," says one theater insider, noting how far removed this Broadway character is from Radcliffe's G-rated Harry Potter.
The show, which opened on Sept. 25, runs through Feb. 8.
P.S. Katie Holmes is just a block away in Arthur Miller's All My Sons.
