Downton Abbey has come to an end – both across the pond and here at home – but the period piece binge is just beginning.

While Downton writer and creator Julian Fellowes has two projects in the pipeline – a miniseries, Dr. Thorne, and a show for NBC, The Gilded Age, fans still have a bit to wait until those will hit their screens (Gilded Age has been said to be aiming for a 2017 release, while Dr. Thorne may be coming at the end of the year.)

After six seasons, PBS Masterpiece's beloved British series about aristocrats and servants has rolled to a gentle, satisfying close. In the final episode, Robert, Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), finally gave up complaining that this or that setback at Downton represented the twilight of the gentry. Everyone, upstairs and down, seemed to agree instead to pretend they were basking in an eternal, sentimental gloaming. Even long-suffering Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) walked down the aisle, although her escort into the future will be a twit.

Life wound up "happy enough," said Lady Violet (Dame Maggie Smith), "which is the English version of a happy ending."

So, goodbye to all that.
