Jonny Lee Miller: How Running 50 Miles Can Save a Child's Life

Originally posted 04/30/2015 08:30PM

Jonny Lee Miller is racing to find a cure for Sanfilippo Syndrome.

On Saturday, the Elementary star will wake up in darkness and begin a 50-mile run through Bear Mountain, New York, on behalf of Jonah's Just Begun, a non-profit formed by one of Elementary's crew members whose child was diagnosed with Sanfilippo.

Miller's goal is to raise funds and awareness for the ultra rare disease, which can cause brain damage, bone deformities and organ failure, and often dramatically shortens the lives of children – many of whom don't live beyond their teenage years.

"There's not enough being done for these kids right now," Miller, 42, tells PEOPLE.

So he runs with an incredibly powerful motivator: "They're little kids, and they're families, and what's more important than that?"

As an actress, Lucy Liu is accustomed to baring her soul before millions every week – but the Elementary star has been moonlighting on a passion project that even she considers incredibly "intimate," and she's also finally ready to reveal what's been going on behind the scenes for the last few years.

On Wednesday, Liu unveils decades of her art – which she has been curating for more than two years – on lucyliu.net. The collection has inspirations as wide-ranging as 9/11 and modern-day slang, and Liu tells PEOPLE, "Ultimately I think it is about sharing – it's about being in an experience."

Despite her very public career, Liu admits she hesitated to expose herself in such a way with this exhibition. She ultimately decided that "it's important to let go of that [discomfort]" and is now exclusively sharing the stories behind a few of her pieces – not to mention a little Elementary scoop – with PEOPLE.

Lucy Liu Gets Pie in the Face on Jimmy Fallon Show

Lucy Liu got pie-eyed with Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night.

The always elegant actress, 44, now starring on the CBS crime drama Elementary, was a good sport as she joined the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon host for a messy game of "Rock, Paper, Scissors, Pie" – and ended up a gooey mess with her face covered with white cream.

Fallon, 38, also took a sweet wallop to the face as the segment placed the stars behind a cutout board – framing them as chefs – and exposed their faces and arms. They put their hands on a device whose handles, when clicked, could deliver an unexpected pie blast.
