When Laguna Beach premiered in 2004, viewers saw high school junior Kristin Cavallari as the fun-loving, popular and sarcastic girlfriend of dreamy Stephen Colletti caught in a love triangle with protagonist Lauren Conrad.
But in her new book Balancing in Heels, Cavallari reveals that the "will they/won't they" plot between pals Colletti and Conrad was cooked up by producers – and damaging to her self-esteem.
"Filming a super-successful reality television show when you are just 17 can do a number on your conception of reality. Like many teenagers, I had no self-awareness and thought only about myself, and that was amplified by starring on Laguna Beach, where I got professional accolades for being outspoken and wild," she writes. "Being tough and rebellious felt like my real identity, and I thought I was in total control of my life. But it wasn't the whole picture. My relationships and the general ups and downs of the that time and immediately after were often manipulated for dramatic effect by TV producers or even myself. Behind the scenes, I was uncomfortable and terrified of getting hurt."
Cavallari, now 29, says she'd fake phone calls, be fed "wild lines" and film scenes out of order all in the name of must-see TV.

Laguna Beach star Casey Reinhardt tied the knot over the weekend near – where else? – the scenic oceanside community where she spent her high school years.
Reinhardt, 29, married Sean Brown at The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast, California, on Saturday, revealing the happy news with several stunning wedding photos.
"Last night was the most magical, incredible, most emotional night of my life!!!" she captioned an Instagram of herself kissing Brown on Sunday. "I became Mrs. Casey Beau Brown and I get to spend the rest of my life with the most amazing man who ever walked this earth. I'm so happy, so in love, and so overwhelmed with emotion just thinking about how beautiful the rest of our lives are going to be together. You are my angel on earth @seanmbrown1 and I'm the luckiest girl in the world to be your wife!!!"
