Bachelor Matt Grant & Fiancée Shayne Lamas Split

Bachelor Matt Grant and fiancée Shayne Lamas have ended their short and often-rocky relationship, they tell PEOPLE.
"We tried hard to make it work but we realized that we were both heading in different directions," the two said in a statement to PEOPLE. "We truly care about each other and will remain close friends."
Neither would elaborate.
Grant, 27, and Lamas, 22, have been plagued with reports of trouble since their televised engagement on ABC's The Bachelor: London Calling in May.
One month later Grant told PEOPLE that he had moved out of Lamas's Century City condominium, citing a need for "space."

The honeymoon is over for the current incarnation of ABC's The Bachelor as far as viewers are concerned, with message boards for the show loudly deriding the series – and the bachelor himself – as degrading.

Sorry, Charlie: Bachelor's Ratings Stink

RATED: In its season premiere Monday night, the two-hour edition of ABC's The Bachelor, starring Charlie O'Connell (brother of Crossing Jordan's Jerry), proved that the honeymoon is over for the dating-game franchise. The show averaged a disappointing 8.26 million viewers, according to preliminary ratings, putting it in fourth place in the 9-10 p.m. timeslot and only a slightly better third place from 10-11 p.m. In better news for its network, the new Sunday night series Grey's Anatomy, with Sandra Oh, attracted 16.2 million viewers for its premiere this week, following the return (after a five-week hiatus) of Desperate Housewives. The week's top show was Tuesday's American Idol, with nearly 28 million viewers.

Charlie O'Connell takes the plunge on the latest installment of ABC's The Bachelor – all thanks to actor brother Jerry (Jordan's Crossing). "(His) friend is one of the producers, and Jerry said, 'What do you think of becoming the next Bachelor,' " recalls Charlie. "I chuckled." Then the New Yorker thought, "Why not?" Charlie, 29, recently talked about finding love among 25 women and confronts the rumor that he dumped his girlfriend for the gig.
