Fresh from their four wins at the Grammys, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis credit famous fan Ellen DeGeneres with helping make "Same Love" a hit.
"We have a lot of praise to show you, because this was the first time that we ever performed live on television," Macklemore, 30, told DeGeneres Tuesday's episoe of her talk show. "You got behind 'Same Love' before anybody else did. Before it was a radio song, before it was out there with the video on MTV, you were behind it."
The duo first appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2012, when they performed "Same Love" – a gay rights anthem that went viral on YouTube – with vocalist Mary Lambert. Since then, the comedian has been a big advocate for their success. Macklemore and Lewis have sold 1.3 million albums and garnered more than 900 million YouTube views, impressive feats considering they are independent artists without a music label.

When this year's Oscar nominations were announced Thursday morning, Meryl Streep says she was fast asleep, firmly convinced that her scene-stealing work in August: Osage County would be overlooked by the Academy.
"They all say, 'Oh, she doesn’t have a chance'… because I'm so old news, you know," Streep told Ellen DeGeneres in an interview set to air Monday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, as she recounted her standing among oddsmakers.
"There is no such thing as talent being old news. That doesn't get old," DeGeneres reminded Streep amid wild cheers from the studio audience. Indeed, Streep had earned another nomination – her 18th, setting an Academy Awards record for an actor or actress.

Silence makes the heart grow fonder? Maybe so at Katy Perry and John Mayer's house.
Both singers need frequent vocal rest – Mayer has needed it critically due to his serious vocal-cord problems – and so, quite often, their home can be oddly quiet.
"I understood that he couldn't talk, and the only way he could communicate was through an iPad," Perry, 29, says in an interview airing Friday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "Some days I have to go on complete vocal rest, like no anything, no whispering. Whispering is actually really bad. There's just a lot of silence in our house most of the time."
