Silence makes the heart grow fonder? Maybe so at Katy Perry and John Mayer's house.
Both singers need frequent vocal rest – Mayer has needed it critically due to his serious vocal-cord problems – and so, quite often, their home can be oddly quiet.
"I understood that he couldn't talk, and the only way he could communicate was through an iPad," Perry, 29, says in an interview airing Friday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "Some days I have to go on complete vocal rest, like no anything, no whispering. Whispering is actually really bad. There's just a lot of silence in our house most of the time."

Ellen DeGeneres wants the world to know that despite reports to the contrary, she's "happily married" to Portia de Rossi.
The talk show host addressed rumors about their five-year marriage during a hilarious monologue on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday, that began with a trip to the hair salon.
"The other day I'm at the hair salon getting these extensions," DeGeneres joked. "And there's tabloids all over the hair salon – that's where they are, I guess. All of a sudden I notice one sitting on the counter in front of me [and] it caught my eye because Portia and I were in the top right-hand corner and I thought, 'Oh, that's sweet, they're honoring us.' "

Both on- and offstage, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are in perfect harmony.
Brooks, 51, stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show Friday to chat about his wife of eight years, with whom he recorded a remake of "After the Fire Is Gone" – one of a handful of songs featured on his new box set, which just hit stores.
During the sit-down, the country crooner recounted first meeting Yearwood back in 1987 – he was already married to his college love Sandy Mahl then – and according to Brooks, his connection with Yearwood was immediate.

Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi are both vegan, but that doesn't stop them from enjoying a Thanksgiving feast.
"It doesn't make [Thanksgiving] harder at all. It makes it easier on the turkeys, too. They get to live," DeGeneres, 55, told PEOPLE at the Duracell Power a Smile and Toys for Tots event on Nov. 22.
So what does The Ellen DeGeneres Show host fill her plate with?
"Yams, green beans, stuffing ... any kind of vegetables. Stuff like that," she said.

Lady Gaga wants to make something clear: She and boyfriend Taylor Kinney aren't as different as people think.
The "Do What U Want" singer, 27, called her buff-bodied hottie a "hidden weirdo" during an appearance Friday on Ellen. "He is extremely strange, actually. We complement each other's weirdness. That's actually one of the first things he ever said to me. It's a Dr. Seuss quote. You find in someone else a compatible weirdness."
Gaga, who met the Chicago Fire star on the set of her "You and I" video in 2011, said she "looked ridiculously crazy" during their first encounter.

Is there really ever a case of too much of a good thing? Not when we're talking about a nearly naked James Franco.
The actor, 35, got the social media world hot and bothered last week when he Instagrammed a pic of himself wearing nothing but a red Speedo and a Santa hat (alongside a cat in a Santa hat).
But while fans thought Christmas had come early – a James Franco with Cats calendar would be the perfect stocking stuffer – they were sorely disappointed to learn that the six-pack abs belonged to a model, whose face had been swapped out with Franco's courtesy of some clever Photoshopping by Ellen DeGeneres' staff ahead of his appearance on her show on Monday.
